Divers missing in Villasimius: bodies found 100 meters deep

The bodies of the two divers missing since Sunday evening were found in the waters off Villasimius, in a stretch of sea where the wreck of the San Marco steamer lies.

After 48 hours of searches, the Navy robot spotted the bodies of Stefano Bianchelli, 56 years old, and Mario Perniciano, 60. The first was the owner of one of the longest-running diving centers in the tourist resort on the south-eastern coast of Sardinia; the other was a friend who had gone with him to place buoys near the wreck of the ship that sank on June 1, 1941.

They have been operating on site since this morning, in addition to the patrol boats and helicopters of the Coast Guard and the Fire Brigade, also the Gaeta minehunter with Navy divers on board who used a depth robot to reach the wreck.

The fire brigade’s Rov robot had already tried yesterday, but without finding anything. Today the activity will be intensified also because between tomorrow and Thursday a worsening of the marine weather conditions is expected which could force the rescue machine to stop.
