The identity of the 23-year-old who died after getting stuck in a used clothes bin in Canonica d’Adda has been discovered.

The victim is Constantine Antonie, Romanian from Fara Gera d’Adda, where he lived with some relatives, a few hundred meters away from the ecological pitch where the tragedy occurred. The young man had no criminal record, so he had never been registered or photographed, a fact which initially made it even more difficult to identify him, not to mention the fact that he had no documents in his pocket.

The reconstruction

According to the latest reconstructions, carried out from camera images and reported by The Echo of Bergamo, the boy would have arrived at the landfill in Via dell’Artigianato around 2am on Monday 6 May, when it was still dark. He climbed over the fence which, to the right of the entrance, separates the pitch from a private company. Afterwards, he headed towards the yellow bin, introducing himself with his head and arms, up to his torso. It would have been at that point that the Romanian realized that he could no longer move, neither trying to enter completely, nor trying to exit.

Since it was an area of warehouses, there was no one around and he may have tried to shout to get someone’s attention, but in vain. According to the 118 doctor, who arrived on site after the emergency call, death occurred due to asphyxia due to crushing of the diaphragm. About six hours would have passed between the accident and the discovery of the body, although his strength may have abandoned him after he had remained trapped for some time.

The discovery of the body

The discovery was made by one of the operators of the site: when he arrived on site with a colleague around 8, he noticed something dangling out of the bin. At first, he thought they were used clothes that had been inserted incorrectly by some user, but then he realized that what was protruding were legs with shoes on their feet. So, he called 112. Antonie had a digital watch on his wrist and a dead cell phone in his pocket: in the position he was in, he probably couldn’t even reach it.

The next steps

Having taken fingerprints, as he was not registered by the authorities, there was no result. Today at the mortuary of the Bergamo hospital the body will be identified by the family, even if its absence from home and the somatic features have left the police with little doubt as to the identity of the corpse. During the day, the Prosecutor’s Office could also order an autopsy, after opening an investigation file.
