“We remind you that African swine fever (ASF) is a viral disease of swine (pigs and wild boars) caused by a viruses of the Asfaviridae family, genus Asfivirus, usually with a fatal outcome, for which there are no vaccines. Humans are not susceptible to the disease, but it does cause it serious socio-economic consequences in the countries where it is widespread.
The typical signs of African swine fever overlap with those of classical swine fever and include fever, loss of appetite, weakness, miscarriages, internal bleeding. The most virulent strains of the virus are generally lethal (the death occurs within 10 days from the onset of the first symptoms). Animals infected with less aggressive strains of the African swine fever virus may not show typical clinical signs.

African swine fever is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2007, outbreaks occurred in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan as well as European Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. From these countries the disease has spread to the European Union: In 2014, the first cases were reported in Lithuania, Poland, Latvia and Estonia; in 2017 the disease was reported in the Czech Republic and Romania; in 2018 it appeared in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Belgium. In Italy it has been present since 1978 in the Sardinia region”.
