The mayor of Cinquefrondi, Michele Conìa at the Catanzaro demonstration: no more “disposable” precarious workers!

According to ISTAT data and the Observatory on precarious employment released by INPS in January
2024, temporary workers appear to be around 3 million and until September 2023, based on data
INPS, were hired with a fixed-term or precarious employment contract
513,411 workers. The number of workers employed under contracts
Occasional Performance (CPO) in January 2024 stands at just under 15,000
units, up 27% compared to the same month in 2023, and the average amount
the gross monthly effective remuneration is equal to 248 euros. The extraordinary
today’s mobilization, in which I participate as mayor, explains Michele Conìa,
mayor and metropolitan councilor, it is an encouraging fact because it tries to
intercept real needs present throughout the world of work, precarious and
fragmented. Every day we continue to read about attacks on the instances and struggles of
workers, stories of men and women, young and old,
foreigners and Italians who die from often precarious and irregular work; flexibility
which was born to give people freedom but instead ended up enslaving them. There
priority will be to eliminate precarious employment and restore working dignity to all that
middle world of underpaid and exploited workers, to reduce inequalities and
increase rights for everyone, equally.” Mayor Conìa does not limit himself
to identify the critical issues but proposes solutions: “Against this model
unacceptable, courageous choices are needed such as relaunching wages with the institution
of a mechanism to adapt them to inflation, the fight against precariousness and the
exploitation through greater public investments in schools, healthcare and
transport; oppose the privatization, commodification and dismantling of
essential public services, fundamental sectors, public utilities and
infrastructure and for equal rights and services throughout the territory
national; protect immigrant workers against any gender discrimination e
for true equal pay, employment and women’s rights, in the places of
work and in society”. From the 2023 Caritas Report on poverty and social exclusion in
Italy entitled “Everything to Lose” shows that having a job is no longer enough to
live a dignified life and national data highlights the disadvantage of
Southern Italy and small municipalities with less than 50 thousand inhabitants: 8.8% of people in
absolute poverty compared to 7.7% in metropolitan areas. “With the unacceptable
project of differentiated autonomy, these inequalities will be destined to
increase and crystallize” underlines the mayor of Cinquefrondi, the first municipality in
Italy which in 2018 adopted a resolution against the implementation of fiscal federalism
and starting, in the following April, the appeal against the equalization system of
Municipal solidarity fund, inviting other municipalities to do the same e
collecting 600 signatures. “Linked to the theme of work there is also the unavoidable one
of safety”, continues Conìa. “In fact, the day after the International Day
of safety and health at work, with anger and sadness we learn of the tragic
news of the mournful events of deaths at work: just think that in February
In 2024, there are already 119 deaths at work, 19% more than in the same period in 2023.
The numbers of deaths in the Catanzaro area are impressive, a black spot at a national level
with 4 white deaths since the beginning of the year. And thoughts run to the tragedy
which took place yesterday in the Palermo area. As long as the workers continue
to be hostage to occupational blackmail and forced precariousness, they will not be able to
never tell yourself you are safe in the workplace. This is why we also ask the
strengthening worker safety, inspection systems and the role of
RLS. Enough precariousness and exploitation! Enough of the logic of male and female workers
“disposable”! We ask, concludes Michele Conìa, for stabilization and
recognition of the correct classification of male and female workers in line with
the administrative tasks performed”.
