Just over a year after the restart of the works, the Superintendence decided to expand the construction site. Yesterday, in fact, the excavations were extended towards the south (in the area in front of the new newsstand ed.).
There motivation? Check for other structures in that area. According to what was collected by CityNow, there would still be no significant news regarding any discovery. To be sure, however, you will have to go deep into the upper layers and as far as possible with controlled mechanical means and then by hand.
The endless construction site
The works in the square date back to the now distant times 2016 when, during the construction work of a parking (then interrupted), the presence of an ancient construction hidden underground had been discovered, which we now know to be a temple from the Roman, more precisely Augustan, period.
The works were blocked and the area abandoned for several years, awaiting a new redevelopment project. The construction site was then restarted in April 2023.
The objective, already partially achieved, by the Superintendency is to bring the Roman building entirely to light and ensure that there are no other finds under the square.
The ancient treasure, according to archaeologists very well preserved, could attract numerous tourists to the city. The former councilor for culture, Irene Calabrò, had in fact put forward the proposal to make it an educational site.
To find out what the future of the Square will be, all that remains is to wait for the outcome of further investigations.
