It’s called “I Can’t Dance. My way of dancing is poetry” the meeting to remember the Brazilian gaùcho poet Mario de Miranda Quintana thirty years after his death. The appointment is Thursday 16 May 2024, at 5.30 pm, in the Aula Magna of the University for Foreigners of Perugia. Mario Quintana (1906-1994) is among the most important Brazilian poets who managed to gain international attention. He has widely enjoyed the favor of official critics in his homeland, winning numerous awards. He said of himself: «I have always thought that any type of confession that is not transfigured by art is indecent. My life is in my poems, I am my poems, I have never written, not even a comma, that wasn’t a confession.”
The meeting is organized by the University for Foreigners of Perugia in collaboration with the publishing house Graphe.it edizioni of Roberto Russo, which has published three Italian translations of Mario Quintana’s poems, and with the Mannaggia bookshop of Perugia. After the greeting of the Magnificent Rector prof. Valerio De Cesaris, there will be a dialogue between the poet Anna Maria Farabbi and the translator Natale Fioretto, professor at the University for Foreigners. The reading of some of Quintana’s poems is entrusted to the actor Luigi Diberti.
The poet Mario Quintana
The poet Mario Quintana is known in his homeland as the poet of simple things, thanks to his playful, imaginative but always profound verses. A distinctive feature of his poetic texts is the brevity and compactness of the verses which well represent the moment, brief, light and apparently devoid of emotion, and ultimately life itself. Mario Quintana wrote: “Poetry/ is the bottle/ of a castaway/ who plays with the sea./ Whoever finds it/ saves himself…”.
A highly imaginative poet, Quintana pursues the ideal of a transparent language, a perfect synthesis between clarity and surprise.
The three translations edited by Graphe.it editions of Perugia are the collection “The color of the invisible”, one of the happiest moments of Quintana’s entire poetic journey, “The sorcerer’s apprentice”, which conquers the reader with its sensitivity that is both delicate and disruptive, enigmatic and imaginative, and an anthology entitled “To live with poetry” with thoughts, aphorisms and poems. The Italian version of all three works is Natale Fioretto with Portuguese text opposite.
