The recent school trip, at first, made one think of a temporary ailment linked to the excesses typical of age.

Yesterday afternoon the body was subjected to an internal diagnostic test, carried out by the medical examiner of the «Rummo» hospital, to ascertain the causes of death, in the absence of complaints from the family members and consequent investigations by the Power of attorney. Immediately afterward, her body was released and is available to the family for the funeral.

On Sunday morning, the boy, who was in perfect physical shape and had no previous pathologies, began to feel the first symptoms of the illness which would then leave him with no escape. Vomiting and a sudden fever preceded the state of semi-consciousness which led to cardiac arrest which occurred within a few minutes. The family members realized that something was wrong and called the 118 health workers but upon the timely arrival of the medical ambulance and the Red Cross resuscitation unit, the 13-year-old was already in cardiac arrest and, despite all efforts to resuscitate him, the His heart never started beating again, not even in the Rummo emergency room where there was a real tour de force by the doctors who continued with resuscitation maneuvers for over two hours in a desperate attempt to save him from death. A devastating experience for all the healthcare staff but above all for the doctor who provided him with treatment in the emergency room, still in shock.

THE HYPOTHESIS

Meanwhile, the ASL has not received any reports from the hospital regarding the suspicion of an infectious disease because the doctors have not detected any clinical signs that would suggest fulminant meningitis. There was no presence of the “petechiae” that appear in these circumstances on the 13-year-old’s body, nor were other symptoms attributable to the disease visible and, finally. there is no evidence to this effect emerging from blood tests. On the other hand, even if the diagnostic test carried out at Rummo had highlighted meningitis, it would still be too late to activate antibiotic prophylaxis for contacts which must be started within 48 hours of the onset of the confirmed case. The possibility of fulminant leukemia also seems to have been excluded because, in this case, the number of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets is significantly altered compared to standard values.

Therefore, at the moment, the possibility of myocarditis remains standing, a pathology which, among the symptoms, also includes sudden high fever and vomiting. And yet it is not so obvious that the diagnostic test carried out yesterday will be able to provide exhaustive answers on the boy’s death and provide an unequivocal diagnosis in this regard. In fact, in the case of the 15-year-old from Benevento, who died suddenly in 2014 in Piazzetta Vari due to cardiac arrest, the autopsy was unable to resolve doubts about the causes of death, and the same happened for a 15-year-old from Montesarchio: the boy died in 2022 following severe abdominal pain that had not led to any diagnosis after the visit and tests in hospital. He had returned home on Sunday but on Monday morning his father found him dead in his bed.
