The Motor Show returns to Turin and brings engines back to the center of the electoral campaign (and in the city squares)

Return the 13-15 September the Turin Motor Show who ran away to Milan four years ago in controversy with the 5-star council. And the presentation of the outdoor event is back, this time on the tracks, at Porta Susa, after those of 23 November, 29 January and 28 March, to the delight of politicians on the campaign trail. In the Turin train station, location chosen because Trenitalia will apply substantial discounts for those who will come by train to the city to admire the four-wheeled cars, next to the governor Alberto Cirio and to the mayor Stefano Lo Russo the Minister of Transport was there Matteo Salvini who boarded the carriage (packed, especially in Turin) of those dissatisfied with the electric car.

In the city squares

In September the Motor Show returns, in plein air version, in the city squares and beyond 40 brands present And «500 thousand visitors expected», (cit. Andrea Levy), but the minister said he fears that in 4-5 years there will be an edition of cars with only electric traction and produced abroad. The reference is obviously to China, the first producer of electric batteries and ready to invade the market with cars too, on days when a historic plant like Mirafiori closes for a month due to lack of orders; in April just over 100 Fiat 500e cars were sold in Italy.

Electric cars and incentives

«There is a topic on which we as a Government, as ministers and as the Italian System must think. The bonuses that we are putting on the market rarely remain in Italy”, stated the Northern League leader. “The Electric cars in Italy are a marginal market, because, despite television advertisements at any time of day or night, the consumer does the math and the majority of electric cars sold are not Italian or European, but are Chinese.” And then he threw a jab at his government colleague, Adolfo Urso, Minister of Productive Activities, which is pushing to bring in a Chinese manufacturer and which has just launched the car incentive plan. «We are in the free market – added Salvini – but we must ask ourselves what sense it makes in putting a billion of citizens’ public money into car bonuses, if a good part of this billion does not end up in Turin but in Beijing».

Salvini’s hope that the next European Parliament will review the rules on full electric by 2035 is music to the ears of many entrepreneurs in the Piedmontese automotive supply chain, now in serious difficulty in the season of the ecological transition of mobility. “It annoys me that the money of a Piedmontese worker goes to fix the budgets of a Chinese factory.” For once, Salvini and mayor Lo Russo stand side by side on the same political positions, who expressed doubts «regarding some strategies that I read about and in which they talk about import of Chinese and Asian industries because we have an important tradition in Turin, which I believe should be maintained and carried forward.”

Election campaign

Not only motor parliament. The car industry in crisis is also back on track in the regional election campaign. “We cannot forget that the manufacturing industry pays a third of the salaries of the Piedmontese,” said governor Alberto Cirio. «In particular, the car has a change to go through, which is the transition to electric. The transition must be made gradually and with common sense – he added -. But our area needs more cars to be built: today 80 thousand cars are made a year in Mirafiori, once 400 thousand were made and 400 thousand is the number of cars that Stellantis makes in Italy.” Between Chinese car makers, electric cars and incentives (all rejected), there is also room for the new presentation of the Auto Show. Which returns to Turin from 13 to 15 September. Which will not be the big car fair but, according to president Andrea Levy, «it will have an innovative exhibition format in the panorama of motoring events. Outdoors, totally free to the public, which takes place in the streets and squares of the center of a large city.”
