Drought in Sicily, national state of emergency proclaimed

Upon proposal of the Minister for Civil Protection Nello Musumecithe Government has decided on a national state of emergency for 12 months, in relation to the serious water deficit situation underway in the territory of Sicilian region. An initial allocation of 20 million euros was also approved to allow the Region to cope with the implementation of the immediate interventions. The territories most affected are the Provinces of Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Enna, Palermo And Trapani. More limited disruptions were recorded in the Province of Messina and in the remaining Provinces of Catania, Ragusa And Syracuse.

“I thank the government for the sensitivity shown and Minister Musumeci for the allocation of the first 20 million euros and for the commitment to implement the resources quickly in the wake of a close collaborative relationship between the Region and the national government”. The governor of Sicily says so Renato Schifani on the meeting of the Council of Ministers which decided on the national state of emergency due to the water crisis on the island.
