Missing and found in Caserta, the 54-year-old: No kidnapping, I wanted to commit suicide

The woman said she would have left voluntarily

No kidnappings or mysterious kidnappers. The 54-year-old from Lanciano (Chieti) who disappeared on April 28th and who reappeared on Saturday evening in Castel Volturno, in the province of Caserta, apparently voluntarily left her home with the intention of committing suicide. This is what emerged during the interrogation yesterday before prosecutor Silvia Di Nunzio of the Prosecutor’s Office of Vasto, in the province of Chieti, responsible for the territory. It was she herself, Milena Santirocco, who reported that she had been kidnapped to the first responders who had reached her on Saturday evening in a cafeteria in the Campania area.

The story of Milena Santirocco

During yesterday’s long interrogation at the Lanciano Police Station – which had started the investigation immediately after the disappearance report presented by the family – the woman spoke of the six days spent away from home, while the relatives and the police they were looking for her on the Abruzzo coast, starting from Torino di Sangro (which falls within the jurisdiction of the Court of Vasto) where her car had been found and from where she later reported that she had left on foot. You would have told the magistrate about a difficult family and economic situation and other reasons that had pushed you to leave.

The woman also reported that she had attempted suicide by throwing herself into the waters of the Volturno mouth nature reserve, a protected area between the province of Caserta and the city of Naples. The story still has unclear contours, given that only yesterday morning the lawyer of ‘Penelope’, the association for missing persons, Antonio Cozza, declared: «Milena did not voluntarily leave her home and her loved ones. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Vasto has opened criminal proceedings against unknown persons for kidnapping and is currently trying to clarify what happened to Milena in recent days.”

The Prefecture of Chieti coordinated the search for the woman, after having set up a group with the Fire Brigade, police forces, molecular dog units, divers from the Guardia di Finanza and volunteers from the Civil Protection. After some reports received by the ‘Penelope’ association, the patrols moved south along the coast, up to Vasto, and at sea up to Termoli (Campobasso) with a Coast Guard patrol boat.
