At San Leonardo in Castellammare, a 101-year-old patient received a hip prosthesis

An extraordinary operation took place in the San Leonardo hospital in Castellammare di Stabia, where a biarticular hip prosthesis was successfully implanted in a 101-year-old patient. The operation, considered exceptional due to the advanced age of the patient, was performed by the head of the orthopedics department, Dr. Roberto Cirillo, with the support of Dr. Lorenzo Panico.

The decision to proceed with the operation was motivated by a subcapita fracture of the femoral neck, a condition that required timely intervention to ensure the patient’s recovery. The anesthesia was performed by specialists Mario Salvatelli and Vincenzo Tarasco.

After the operation, the patient was transferred to the orthopedics department to immediately begin the rehabilitation process. Surprisingly, just a few days after the operation, the 101-year-old is in good condition and is able to stand. The ASL Napoli 3 Sud highlighted that the success of this intervention was possible thanks to the teamwork and competence of the medical and nursing staff of the San Leonardo hospital.

During 2023, 205 femoral neck fractures were treated in elderly patients over 65 in Castellammare di Stabia, with positive results in almost all cases. This result testifies not only to the excellence of the care offered by the hospital, but also to the constant commitment of the strategic management and healthcare personnel in ensuring increasingly effective and high-quality services to the citizens of the area.
