Spugna project in Legnano: interventions begin on Piazza Trento and Trieste to avoid flooding

Opens the week of May 6th in the public garden of Piazza Trento and Trieste the first construction site of interventions planned in Legnano by “Città Metropolitana Spugna”the project which includes 90 interventions in 32 municipalities in the area, which involves the CAP Group, manager of the water service of the metropolitan city of Milan, and which obtained admission to financing from the Ministry of the Interior for one of the tenders within the PNRR.

“Spugna” aims to achieve different sustainable urban drainage interventions to allow the absorption of rainwaterwith particular attention to the most intense events, without clogging the sewer systems and avoiding flooding. The interventions are based on natural processes that exploit plants and vegetal elements to absorb water and involve the replacement of asphalt with permeable surfaces capable of filtering water and, at the same time, mitigating heat islands in the urban fabric .

The project for the public garden in Piazza Trento and Trieste provides for the disconnection of the white water collection network from the sewer so as to no longer convey rainwater into the sewer, a situation which, in the presence of abundant and violent rainfall, causes overload problems in the pipes and the leakage of water onto public land. «The project that will be carried out by CAP aims to make the garden self-sufficient – explains Marco Bianchi, councilor for public works – that is, capable of disposing of rainwater on its own, thus relieving the sewerage of a load which, in the presence of abundant rainfall, risks creating those problems that in recent years, due to ongoing climate change, some areas of our city have suffered on several occasions. Those of “Spugna” are specific interventions that go in the direction of soil de-waterproofing, a principle referred to several times in the PGT and which will be applied in the urban transformations envisaged by the document in terms of environmental sustainability and territorial protection”.

The greater permeability of the soil will be achieved with three precautions: there replacement of asphalt with draining pavementthe creation of “rain gardens” in the flowerbeds it’s a slope system which will allow the water to flow towards the draining parts of the garden. The works will last three months And they will not interfere with accessibility to the Mazzini primary school. The other five interventions of the project planned in the city will concern: the car parks in via Matteotti, corso Magenta, via Gilardelli, via Rossini/Gaeta and the cycle path which will be built along the perimeter of the car park in via Podgora.
