The story of the two alleged Iranian smugglers detained in Calabria

The Regional Guarantor of the rights of persons detained or deprived of personal liberty, Luca Muglia, is examining the position and conditions of the two Iranian women imprisoned in Calabrian prisons, accused of aiding and abetting illegal immigration. In recent months, the names of the two prisoners had been made known by various media, given the outcry caused by their respective personal stories and the methods that had determined the application of the inframural precautionary measure.

It’s about Maysoon Majidiconfined at the Castrovillari prison, and of Qaderi Maryam, restricted to the prison of Reggio Calabria. We met with the Muglia Regional Guarantor several times Maysoon Majiditogether with the Guarantor of the Province of Cosenza Francesco Cosentininoting a progressive loss of weight in the young woman, strongly affected by the detention and by the fear that she may not be involved in the accusations made against her quickly.

As for Qaderi Maryamthe conditions of the same have been paid attention to by the National Guarantor of the rights of persons deprived of liberty, Felice Maurizio D’Ettore, as the separation from her 8-year-old son, temporarily entrusted to the care of an Afghan family in the community, would have generated a series of acts of self-harm and critical events. Some clarifications on the conditions of the two women have already been requested by the National Guarantor from the penitentiary institutions of Reggio Calabria and Castrovillari, further investigations will follow shortly due to the nature of the mandates conferred on it by Italian and international legislation.

The story of the young Iranian women detained, accused of being smugglers in the context of two different criminal proceedings, worries and questions a lot – stated the Guarantor Muglia –. My Office and that of the National Guarantor have worked together to implement all the necessary interventions. While we trust in the judiciary, which will certainly shed full light on the issues being investigated, we cannot refrain from pointing out illogicalities and anomalies. In both cases, in fact, these are women with particular stories behind them who have paid large sums of money to move away from their country of origin, fearing for their own safety.

Maysoon Majidi is a well-known Kurdish director and human rights activist who was forced to flee, together with her brother, first from Iran and then from Iraqi Kurdistan due to her anti-government protest activities which had put her life in danger life. Qaderi Maryam, who fled Iran with her son to escape a dramatic situation, during the journey from Turkey on board a sailing boat was allegedly subjected to an attempt at sexual violence by the same three men who, upon arrival in Italy, they accused her of being a smuggler.

The atypical nature of the story shared by the two women is given by the linguistic difficulties and the fact that almost all the migrants who were on their respective boats left the Italian territory without being heard from. The picture that has emerged – concluded the Guarantor Muglia – confirms the need for the repression of the facilitation of illegal immigration to make use of different methods capable of ascertaining the identification of responsibilities with greater punctuality and rigor. It would be necessary to introduce the use of specialized investigative teams, the use of the most advanced technologies, the crystallization of the evidence immediately upon disembarkation and to guarantee the effectiveness of the right of defense. We cannot run the risk of mistaking victims for executioners“.
