The young woman was killed by her ex-boyfriend Filippo Turetta in November 2023. The pain of her father Gino. Uncle: «It shouldn’t have ended like this»

It’s a sunny day. Giulia and Gino are in Padua. They hint at a smile. They look carefree and happy. Perhaps the first selfie taken after months marked by the pain of the loss of their beloved mother Monica. It was May 5, 2023 and Giulia Cecchettin was turning 22. In front of her, the dreams and relief of a degree almost achieved. A future shattered, a few months later, by her ex-boyfriend Filippo Turetta, who has been in prison in Verona since November on charges of having kidnapped and killed the student from Vigonovo (Venice).

The father’s pain

Today, May 5, Giulia would be 23 and, in the house where she lived with her father and brothers Davide and Elena, the pain becomes even stronger. «It’s hard – explains Gino Cecchettin on the phone -, it is every single day when I get up and see Giulia’s room empty. I see the photos of her hanging on her wall together with her cheerful comics, her clothes on her chair, how she had left them and the many memories that I keep in my heart.” She told some of her stories in “Dear Giulia”, the book, published by Rizzoli, which she wrote together with Marco Franzoso to try to save, in the name of her daughter, women victims of violence and abuse. Submissive in a society, as Gino explained several times, still patriarchal, where women are considered the property of men as such. A message that Cecchettin is taking around Italy with meetings in schools and squares.

The event cancelled

On Saturday, at 6pm, he should have been at the Naviglio in Padua to speak to young people, but the event was cancelled, confirms the engineer from Vigonovo, not by his choice, but by the publishing house, in agreement with the organizers «due to problems linked to the place where it should have taken place, considered “unsuitable”. «Although I don’t know how I would have managed, at this moment, to face an audience, I would have gladly gone to talk to the kids in the places where they meet – Gino says -. An opportunity that I hope I will soon be able to recover.” On the Facebook page, Cecchettin, in recent days, has published a drawing, a colorful comic that is very reminiscent of the ones Giulia used to make and above the phrase, her nickname “apple pie”. «A girl sent it to me telling me that Giulia had inspired it – he says – I got excited and thought: “Look, Giulia, what you’re up to…” One of the many beautiful things she is doing from up there.”

Uncle Andrea: it shouldn’t have ended like this

Also yesterday, uncle Andrea Camerotto dedicated a long post to his niece on social media to remember her on her birthday. «Dear Giulia, I should have thought about what present you would get for your birthday – writes Andrea – and, as always, I would have returned to give you a little tip which you, as your parents taught you, would have spent sparingly on your studies or on your entertainment. Little Star, I realized that you were a gift. You gave us smiles, goodness, altruism, intelligence and delicacy and much more… Hello, say hello to your mother…”. «Today I will go to the cemetery and I will bring her 23 white roses – Uncle Andrea says – There are no words to describe the immense pain we are feeling. It shouldn’t have ended like this.”
