The day’s appointments for the new Archbishop of Udine

A historic moment, of great solemnity and celebration, today Sunday 5 May in the Friulian capital. The Archdiocese of Udine will welcome its new pastor, Monsignor Riccardo Lamba, who will succeed Monsignor Andrea Bruno Mazzocato at the helm of the Udine Church. A passing of the baton, with a capital letter, because it is the historic change between two pastors of the Udine Church. In fact, it is in Udine that it is located the chair of the Archbishopon which – over the centuries – Patriarchs and Archbishops have alternated.

“For me it is a great gift to have this responsibility, taking up the legacy of Bishop Andrea Bruno Mazzocato. I truly feel it as a passing witness – said Monsignor Riccardo Lamba, reached by the microphones of the diocesan broadcaster Radio Spazio -. For me it is a period of trepidation and gratitude, as well as waiting for what will be born in Udine”. The ceremony of the day will be particularly rich and will be divided into different moments.

The appointments

Monsignor Lamba will enter the city in the early afternoon: at 3.30 pm in Piazza Libertà he will be welcomed by the youth party of the Parishes, called to celebrate with colorful banners to welcome the new pastor. After a short prayer and some greetings, the young people and the Archbishop will form a procession towards Via Vittorio Veneto and Piazza del Duomo. Outside the Cathedral, Msgr. Lamba will be welcomed by the apostolic administrator and his predecessor, Msgr. Andrea Bruno Mazzocato, and by the mayor of Udine, Alberto Felice De Toni.

The central moment: the Holy Mass

The culminating moment will be the Holy Mass, which will start around 4.15pm and will be animated by the musical chapel of the Udine Cathedral. At the celebration sixteen Bishops will be present – including Lamba and Mazzocato –, including the patriarch of Venice Msgr. Francesco Moraglia and the Bishops of Ljubljana and Koper. At the beginning of the celebration the archiepiscopal chancellor will give reading of the Apostolic Letter with which the Pope assigns the pastoral governance of the Church of Udine to Bishop Riccardo Lamba. The solemn reading and display of the letter will end with the passing of the pastoral staff from Bishop Andrea Bruno to Bishop Riccardo. The latter will then ascend to the chair and sit there: from that moment he will be in all respects Metropolitan Archbishop of Udinewelcomed by the sound of the ringing bells and the singing of the Aquileian acclamations.

The Mass will then begin and take place as usual. The readings and prayers of the faithful will be proclaimed in the languages of the Udine Church: Italian, Friulian and Slovenian, as well as in the dialects of Timau/Tischlbong and Resia/Reśija. “Linguistic plurality is certainly a gift”, stated Mgr. Lamba. «Languages are spoken by being with people and they tell the richness of their stories, sensitivities, cultures and different traditions».

To participate in the Holy Mass

The faithful will be able to freely participate in the Mass: There are no registrations or tickets to enter the Cathedral, although extraordinary security measures will be in place. In the Cathedral there will be some seats reserved for the numerous authorities present and for the relatives of Msgr. Riccardo Lamba, therefore the faithful are advised to arrive at the Cathedral well in advance.

At the end of the Mass, the Archbishop and the invited authorities will go to the archbishop’s palace for an institutional greeting. This moment will not be open to the public, but only to guests and accredited journalists.
