European elections 2024, the complete guide: how and when to vote

Between 6 and 9 June, millions of Europeans will be called to participate in the European elections, to elect a total of 720 MEPs, 15 more than in the last mandate. In Italyin particular the polls will be open Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June and all Italians will be able to express their preference for the nomination of 76 representatives of the EU Parliament.

How and when you vote

As established by European electoral law, all member countries of the Union must use a proportional electoral system, which ensures that the various lists have a number of places proportional to the votes obtained. In our country, preferential voting is used, which allows voters to mark up to one maximum of three preferences on the same list (provided the candidates chosen are of different sex).

In Italy the polls will be open between 2pm and 10pm on Saturday 8 June and from 7am to 11pm on Sunday 9 June (at the same time in our country the regional elections in Piedmont and the administrative elections in 3,700 municipalities will also be held). The counting of votes will begin at 11pm on the same Sunday. To vote you must show up at your polling station with your ballot paper and a valid identity document.

What are the constituencies

In Italy there are five European electoral constituencies: North Western, North Eastern, Central, Southern and Insular. Each constituency is assigned a certain number of seats based on the population that resides there.

Where to vote

Every citizen is called to vote at the polling station in which he or she is registered, which is indicated on the electoral card. To find out your polling station, if you do not yet have the card, you must ask your municipality of residence for information.

Voting for those out of office

With law 38 of 25 March 2024, the possibility was introduced for a limited group of “non-residents”, i.e. students, to vote outside their municipality of residence on the occasion of the European elections (provided they are still within Italian territory ). To participate in the polls in a domicile other than their place of residence, young voters had until today, May 5, to submit an application to the municipality of residence. The latter, once the requirements have been verified, will have to send a communication to the one of residence or to the regional capital which, in turn, will have to pass to the Prefecture – by 22 May – the number of children registered in the electoral lists who have requested to vote out of office. Finally, students will receive a certificate of admission to vote indicating the number and address of the section where they will vote. The new law concerns exclusively those who live outside their residence for study reasons: those away from home for work and health reasons are therefore excluded.

The vote for those who live abroad

Those who have transferred their residence to another member state of the European Union and are registered in the AIRE (Register of Italians Resident Abroad) have the possibility to vote at the polling stations set up abroad by the Italian diplomatic-consular offices of the Country of Residence.
