PERUGIA The section of the Orte-Falconara railway line that goes from the Terni stations to the Foligno station has been closed since yesterday evening. Until the morning of June 8th there are 35 days of work that will revolutionize rail transport and split the Umbria of trains in two. All to allow a series of safety measures and modernization of technologies by RFI. Twenty million euro jobs that will see 120 workers at work. A stop that will affect around eighty trains scheduled daily (round trip) including the cancellation (the first train was canceled last night) of the Frecciargento.
PLAN
Trenitalia’s plan to guarantee services includes replacement buses between Foligno and Terni, rescheduled timetables especially for regional and Intercity trains diverted to Terontola (those arriving from Ancona and those departing from Perugia always for Rome and consequent return also towards the Marche ). Here is the detail. Intercity trains Milan-Terni will be canceled between and Foligno-Terni. Replacement bus connections are planned. The Rome-Ancona Intercity trains will be diverted via Orte-Terontola with rescheduled timetables and elimination of the Terni and Spoleto stops. Replacement bus connections are planned. The Rome-Perugia Intercity trains diverted onto the Orte-Terontola route (travel times to Rome from Perugia are in line with those of the more traditional route) with rescheduled timetables and suppression of stops between Terni and Perugia Ponte San Giovanni. As regards regional trains, from today until 5am on 8 June, timetable changes for the Ancona-Rome, the Perugia-Rome, the Ancona-Foligno, Perugia-Foligno and Terni-Rome. Replacement buses are available on the Foligno-Terni route. The Terni–Rome trains, in addition to some timetable changes, will also suffer some cancellations, but the new regional train 34773 Terni 8.24-Roma Tiburtina 10.05 has been set up, as requested by the Coordination Committee of Umbrian commuters. By the way, the Coordination suggests travelers to constantly consult train timetables throughout the lockdown period.
STRIKE
In the midst of the 35 days of stoppage there is also, from 9pm today to 9pm tomorrow, the national strike called by the private sector USB which according to the FS Group «could have a significant impact on railway traffic and lead to total cancellations and partial Frecce, Intercity and Trenitalia Regional trains”.
THE CONSTRUCTION SITE
The works contracted by the RFI include the construction of an artificial rockfall tunnel (40 meters long) to protect the railway site from hydrogeological instability phenomena and strengthening of the rock walls for 360 meters in the Valserra area where the landslide occurred on 7 January 2021 The slab track will be built in the Balduini tunnel in the Baiano-Giuncano section, approximately 1700 meters long. The slab track, explained by RFI, is an innovative methodology, in which the track does not have a ballast with sleepers and ballast but is built on a prefabricated reinforced concrete structure and has the aim of reducing the frequency of maintenance interventions, thus ensuring greater regularity of railway traffic. Preparatory works are also planned for the technological upgrading of the Spoleto station, linked to the construction of the new Acc (Computerized Central Equipment), i.e. the control room that manages railway circulation, especially in case of critical issues, guaranteeing greater flexibility in the use of the railway tracks. station. On this occasion, the work of doubling the Spoleto-Campello section will be accelerated and a preparatory intervention will be carried out for the activation of the ERTMS (European Rail Transport Management System), the most advanced system for the supervision and control of the movement of trains, between Foligno, Terni and Orte.
