PERUGIA – Two victims in a few hours, two grandmothers aged 84 and 94 who ended up in the network of a scammer. Victims of a well-thought-out suggestion and then of shame, so much so that they did not want to immediately report the incident, and then dissolved into tears in front of the jewels and money recovered by the police. With a woman, without any scruples even in front of an almost centenarian, who ended up under house arrest for aggravated fraud in competition, for having agreed to appear in front of the homes of the two elderly people to recover the thousands of euros needed by a relative in difficulty. Which obviously doesn’t exist.

This is the report of one of the latest investigations by the flying squad, directed by Maria Assunta Ghizzoni, after the two scams committed last February 26th in Perugia and Corciano. Unfortunately, the method is always the same: a call comes to the home phone or the victims’ mobile phone. A man introduces himself as a relative or as a representative of the police and warns that a person will arrive shortly to recover money and jewels to help a relative of the elderly woman in difficulty. In the first case, the man introduced himself as a “brother-in-law”, with the old woman so influenced by her concern that she did not recognize her voice as foreign. In both cases, the scammer explained to the victims how within a few minutes a woman or even a “postwoman” would arrive to collect the envelope with the valuables needed to get her relative out of trouble. And so she went.
But something went wrong in the scammers’ plan. Because that very morning there had been several calls to 112 to report these suspicious calls and in the afternoon, when the last request for help arrived from Corciano, the police were prepared. Thanks to the information collected on a suspicious car, the Mobile men tracked down the car – which later turned out to be rented in Naples – with a woman on board. She was nervous and agitated, she was identified as a 41-year-old resident in Campania with a history of robbery. Inside her bag, 2,700 euros were found and above all, in an envelope cleverly hidden under the passenger seat mat, various jewels and valuables. Those immediately recognized as their own by the victims who, initially, not even to their relatives “out of too much shame” had admitted that they had been deceived.

The woman was thus reported and then the prosecutor directed by Raffaele Cantone requested the precautionary measure of house arrest against her. The investigators also brought the results of the investigations to the investigating judge which, thanks to the images of the security cameras and even the car’s GPS, placed the 41-year-old without a shadow of a doubt on the places of the crimes, in the area and at the time of the “pick-ups”. ”. Also recognized by the victims as the woman who took money and jewelery from their homes, she ended up under house arrest. While investigations continue to track down the man on the other end of the phone, there is suspicion that it may be a well-organised gang.
