FOLIGNO – Yet another theft in the historic centre, yet another trader who has to repair the damage out of his own pocket and yet another thief still on the loose. And perhaps it is always the same person who carries out the thefts. This time, it was the Bar Duomo that was targeted, a stone’s throw from the Cathedral of San Feliciano and three from Piazza della Repubblica overlooking the Palazzo del Comune, therefore the heart of the historic centre. Whoever took action broke, perhaps by kicking, the glass window that opens onto the ice cream area of the bar. Once inside the criminal’s fury was directed at the cash register, which was left by the owners promptly without money. The fact of being left empty-handed may have pushed the criminal to attack the ice cream cone and cup dispensers. Bottom line: thieves empty-handed and damages of over a thousand euros. One of the managers of the Duomo Bar discovered what happened when the business opened in the morning. For weeks the historic center of Foligno has been plagued by small and large-scale thefts. And there is the suspicion that the perpetrator may have been a small group of individuals, in many cases even a lone thief who was often already known to the police but physically at large. There would be both complaints and recognitions but for weeks what is now called Diabolik has been taking away the sleep of several traders in Foligno by attempting or committing thefts resulting in often greater damage caused than the amount of loot. Diabolik because the modus operandi would be a sort of signature: he always acts, or almost always, with his face half-covered as if he were wearing Diabolik’s mask. His actions became the main topic in several message exchanges between traders. The police are hunting Diabolik and have been constantly busy for days trying to close the circle around the Scarlet Pimpernel that violates commercial activities. Based on what it was possible to learn, even if the information on the facts is rather rarefied, there would also be a potential identikit useful for identifying the main suspect. We then need to ascertain how many of the attempted and completed thefts may have been carried out by what at the moment can be defined as a sort of scarlet pimpernel of thefts. The various images captured by both the Municipality’s cameras and the private ones present inside the targeted businesses are also being analysed. The suspect would therefore be a sort of serial thief with not particularly strong criminal capacity. In short, he is a person who needs cash and for this reason aims for situations that earn him a few hundred euros while leaving a long trail of damage including forced doors, broken glass and unhinged windows. The episodes he is investigating would be, according to the chatter between traders, around twenty with a count starting from the end of the last months of the past year up to the last few weeks. The feeling is that it may have always been the same person who acted but the possibility of an “imitator” cannot be ruled out either. What is certain is that anyone who raises the shutter of their shop every morning is at the limit of exasperation.
