On May 3, 1982, the Campanian maritime entrepreneur Gennaro Musella was murdered in Reggio Calabria. Musella led one of the largest companies in the sector in the south. It’s 8:20 in the morning. A bomb placed in his car blows him up. Almost nothing remained of his body. The violence with which the ‘Ndrangheta struck certainly makes it clear how inconvenient the entrepreneur was for the interests of the criminal associations. Her daughter, Adriana Musella, in fact, a few years ago, when recalling the story of her father, told the press that “Following his complaint, the race was canceled and rescheduled. Five days before the second race, he blew up”.
The case was dropped. Nothing was ever known about the instigators and perpetrators. It was not possible to find a solution that respected the memory of a man who had simply decided to work honestly.
Only in 2009, after a long process, did the family obtain recognition for their relative as a victim of the ‘ndrangheta as a sort of compensation for all the pain suffered.
Certainly, mechanisms were hidden among the contracts that fueled a less than transparent economy.
Countering illegality is often difficult when you are isolated. We certainly need to be united and involve young people so that they believe in the institutions and in the possibility of redemption.
The National Coordination of Teachers of the discipline of Human Rights intends to remember the figure of Gennaro Musella, through the work of the student Ilaria Galea of class I section. D of the Filolao Scientific High School in Crotone.

He paid a high price for this denunciation: with his own life. His, his was a cruel and unexpected death; he got into his car, not knowing that a bomb had been placed on it, which exploded when the car was opened, leaving only the remains of the car and Gennaro, injuring 4 other people. Despite having fought for legality, Gennaro was unable to overcome the cruelty of the mafia. We young people must be united and believe in legality so that stories like that of the engineer Musella are never repeated again” –
