Lamezia, scams targeting the elderly: three precautionary measures

Lamezia TermeMay 3, 2024 – The carabinieri of the operational and mobile unit of the Lamezia Terme Company carried out three precautionary measures against as many people accused of having carried out a series of scams against elderly people in Naples, in the “Ponticelli” district. The measures were issued by the investigating judge of Palmi at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The scams were organized with the “fake policeman” technique. That is, the organizers, posing as policemen, telephoned the intended victim, proposing the arrest of a relative and requesting money and gold as bail. Then the delivery methods of what was agreed were provided. At that point the so-called “debt collectors” intervened, i.e. people who, also in this case posing as carabinieri or lawyers, went to the victims’ homes to have money or valuables delivered.

The investigation made it possible to attribute to the recipients of the precautionary measures three criminal episodes, which occurred in December 2023, one of which was carried out in Besnate, in the province of Varese, against a ninety-three-year-old, from whom 15 thousand were stolen euro, and two attempted scams in Gioia Tauro and Lamezia Terme against the same number of people over seventy.
