In recent decades, many municipalities on the island, including large cities, have undergone progressive depopulation. Particularly penalized are certainly the territories that are located in mountainous contexts or in internal areas where job opportunities are less frequent and services in many cases are also scarce. In these areas, in fact, it is more difficult to organize a network of infrastructures, connections and services, including social, educational, cultural and scholastic ones. The consequence is that large areas of Sicily are less livable for families, especially if they have dependent children.
The conference organized by the Association of Sicilian Municipalities (which, not by chance, will take place in San Marco d’Alunzio, one of the many mountain municipalities in Sicily which has been trying to combat the consequences of abandonment for years) aims to focus attention on how to implement territorial development policies to combat this phenomenon with the aim of starting a new phase of socio-economic planning.
