Ravenna, rare chimpanzee puppy born: Tom’s arrival at the zoo

Tom was born at Safari Ravenna. It is the first example of chimpanzee belonging to the subspecies ‘verus‘ came into the world in an Italian zoo. The news of the blue ribbon was released on Thursday 2 May, during the “Welcome Jane Goodall” meeting at the Bioparco in Rome, which was attended by an exceptional guest: Jane Goodall, ethologist and anthropologist known internationally for her pioneering research on chimpanzees in the wild. She was the one who created the project “Pan Italy”, a round table aimed at Italian zoos that host chimpanzees to discuss modern management criteria for the species. Since 2015, Safari Ravenna has a group of chimpanzees that have been included in the European conservation program ex situ EEP (EAZA Ex Situ Programme). A team of 8-12 members including expert keepers, veterinarians, consultants, nutritionists and ethologists is involved in their management. The expansion and adaptation of internal departments and external exhibits required an investment of 1 million 100 thousand euros and every year the total expenses reserved for their management amount to 820 thousand euros.
