The negotiations and discussion for the choice of mayoral candidates ended a few weeks ago. But there is another game, conducted mostly under the radar and decidedly more complicated, which has been going on for months: that of composing the lists of aspiring councillors. Thirty-two names that each party or movement must include in the list, equal to the places available at Palazzo San Giorgio, 20 for the majority and 12 for the opposition. The deadlines for submissions expire in just over a week: on May 11th, at 12pm, the three mayoral candidates will have to ‘officialize’ their respective teams that will support them until the vote on June 8th and 9th.
As has already happened in previous elections, a close fight is expected to win a seat in the Municipality, with an army of at least 400 people competing. The progressive camp that supports Marialuisa Forte, according to sources within the coalition, already has four lists ready: the one that refers to the Democratic Party with several incumbents but also ‘old’ faces of the Baptist administration, that of the 5 Stars in which the members of the current council, that of the Greens and the Left, and the list of socialists. In these hours it seems that we are also working on a mayor’s list, so it is not excluded that a fifth team could appear next Saturday.
However, the centre-right group in support of the mayoral candidate Aldo De Benedittis is more neighing. According to those in the know, six lists are already closed, those that refer to the national parties Forza Italia, Lega, Fratelli d’Italia and UDC, and to which are added those attributable to the local movements, Popolari per l’Italia and Noi Moderati. Also in this case the administrators of Campobasso and the regional coordinators are working to try to create a seventh list.
Finally, Pino Ruta’s civic construction site, which started its electoral campaign already in December, will certainly be able to count on two lists and it cannot be ruled out that the third could be closed in the Cesarini area.
In short, all things considered, Campobasso voters could find themselves faced with 480 candidates (if they manage to close the lists still in the balance) and, with the possibility of split voting, the scare of the run-off is definitely around the corner.
