“Lights from the Mediterranean”. Scheduled events
Descriptive text here

With next Thursday’s “Europe Day” – a meeting with the schools in the Mario Nuccio IC – the calendar of events characterizing the first phase of “Lights from the Mediterranean” opens in Marsala. This is the common thread that – from May to December – ties together many initiatives which, started in Marsala, will also reach Assisi in the name of Friendship and Peace, highlighting best practices in the wake of a sustainable and supportive future. Mayor Massimo Grillo: “Luci dal Mediterraneo is a cultural journey that places Marsala at the center of a rich program that embraces history, archaeology, traditions and music of the peoples of Europe. 2024 will then be a particularly significant edition, which will see Marsala become the protagonist of three unique events: the inauguration of the first Wine Museum dedicated to John Woodhouse and the publication by the Italian Post Office of a stamp dedicated to 250 years of wine Marsala. Then the special edition of the Zecchino D’Oro of Marsala, from an idea of the Antoniano of Bologna to celebrate music as an instrument of Peace, with the Marsala children as protagonists. Lights from the Mediterranean will end in October, in the city of Assisi, with the donation of our city’s wine to the Sacred Convent for the Eucharistic celebration. An extraordinary event sealing the fraternal twinning between Marsala and Assisi”.

We were talking about the first appointment on May 9th, where the theme “From the Unification of Italy to the Europe of Peoples” introduces the “Garibaldine Demonstrations” (Saturday 11th). On the day in which the historic Landing of the Thousand occurs, also the memory of the civilian victims of 1943 and the presentation of the book “11 May 1860” by Prof. Luigi Mascilli Migliorini by the Marsala Wine Route, in collaboration with the Study Center Risorgimento and Garibaldini International. This will be followed by the inauguration of the pedestrian area in via Cammareri Scurti – a space to be experienced in complete safety for young and old – and, in the evening, the concert by Lidia Schillaci with her Woman Orchestra at the Teatro Impero. Then on Sunday 12th, a moment long awaited by the City: the opening of the Marsala Wine Museum, dedicated to John Woodhouse. The event at Palazzo Fici – enlivened by the jazz of Roberta Genna – will be underlined with a philatelic postmark curated by the Italian Post Office. Furthermore, the inauguration of the Museum also coincides with the naming of a room after Marisa Leo (wine woman victim of feminicide), to whom the artist Fabio Ingrassia dedicated a pictorial work. And in the wake of “Luci dal Mediterraneo” there is also “Mediterraneamente”, a message of solidarity and peace that the children of the city send through books and music. Coordinated by the educational club “On. Franceso De Vita”, the “Festival of Little Readers” takes place over three days (from the 17th to the 19th) with a rich and engaging programme, including meetings with the authors and reading workshops. At the end of the initiative, on Monday 20 May, the ideal “Journey to the Mediterranean” will be accompanied by the songs of the Zecchino d’Oro of the Antoniano of Bologna. The rock concert of the band “Reale” (Thursday 23) and the “World Children’s Day” (25 and 26 May) will close this first phase of “Luci dal Mediterraneo” whose initiatives dedicated to peace and the value of communities will continue until next December.
