Modena Belcanto Festival, everything is ready for the first edition

It kicks off Tuesday 7 May the first edition of Modena Belcanto Festival, the event promoted by the Municipality of Modena, the Teatro Comunale Foundation, the Modena Foundation and the Vecchi-Tonelli Conservatory dedicated to bel canto in its broadest sense. The program will touch the places of Modena’s music, starting from the Pavarotti-Freni Municipal Theatre, but also unusual spaces and theaters in the province. Established artists and young talents will compose a rich program capable of ranging beyond opera. The inauguration will be a musical journey At the origins of bel canto, with music from the manuscripts of the Estense Library of Modena interpreted by the Compagnia dei Violini directed by Alessandro Ciccolini, with the solo voice of the soprano Monica Piccinini (Chiesa Sant’Agostino, 7 May). They will follow Songs from the twentieth century interpreted by voice Of Cristina Zavalloni with the pianist Enrico Zanisi (Massimo Troisi Theater in Nonantona, 8 May).

A tribute to bel canto in the strictest sense of the term, it will be on stage The Puritans by Bellini, directed by Francesco Esposito, the scenes by Rinaldo Rinaldi and with Alessandro d’Agostini as musical director (Teatro Pavarotti-Freni, 10 and 12 May). There will be three concerts in the event Contemporary Modena: Vox: the 4 elementswith Giulia Zaniboni (Ridotto of the Pavarotti-Freni Theatre, 9 May); The human voice with Caterina Dellaere and Carlo Emilio Tortarolo on the piano (Teatro della Fondazione Collegio San Carlo, 11 May); And Slate Petals, concert for voice and live electronics with Ljuba Bergamelli and Zeno Baldi (Teatro della Fondazione Collegio San Carlo, 26 May). Bel canto in art venues: three chamber events in the Cortile dell’acero at the Palazzo dei Musei (18 May), in the Ex-AGO Chapel (25 May) and in the courtyard of Palazzo Margherita (26 May) which will see the protagonists singers selected by the Modena Belcanto Masterclass. This Masterclass – held by prestigious teachers such as Carmen Giannattasio, Sonia Prina, Cristina Zavalloni and Antonino Siragusa – is one of the flagships of the event, also designed with the aim of giving opportunities for professional growth and visibility to young emerging voices. In fact, the program also includes the Lyric-symphonic concert with the Italian Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alessandro d’Agostini and with the performers of the Masterclass (Teatro Carani in Sassuolo, 22 May); and the Concert of young talents with the Via Emilia Youth Orchestra conducted by Alpaslan Ertüngealp with the students of the masterclasses of the Teatro Comunale and Raina Kabaivanska (Teatro Pavarotti-Freni, 24 May).

Among the flagship events, the performance by the Japanese artist Hatis Noit with Akasha’s visuals – for a world premiere project dedicated to the Modena Belcanto Festival – with Marina Herlop (Pavarotti-Freni Theatre, 16 May); and the Gala concert dedicated to Puccini on the centenary of his death, with Stefano Ranzani at the head of Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipal Theater of Modena and with soloists Gregory Kunde And Carmen Giannattasio (Pavarotti-Freni Theatre, 20 May). Cinematographic events are also scheduled, with the screening of the restored silent film on Enrico Caruso My Cousin – with unpublished music commissioned by the Festival, performed live, by the composer Daniele Furlati – which will allow you to hear the tenor who died in 1921 sing “Vesti la giubba” by clowns of Leoncavallo. And the competition Vox/Image for short films under 30 on the theme of bel canto (Sala Truffaut, 29 May). Leone Magiera and his ninetieth birthday will be celebrated in an opera concert with Valerio Morelli, bass-baritone winner of the first edition of the Leone Magiera Prize, the soprano Gesua Gallifoco and the tenor Lorenzo Martelli, with the extraordinary participation of Carmela Remigio and Fabio Sartori (Teatro Pavarotti-Freni, 30 May).


In June and July the programming will move in the park of the Luciano Pavarotti House Museum: Sunday morning picnic-concert scheduled (16, 23, 30 June, 7 July); conferences on current affairs held by Stefano Massini (June 18), Stefano Mancuso (25 June), Serena Dandini with Orsetta De Rossi And Annalisa Corrado (June 26), Gad Lerner And Enzo Bianchi (3 July); and other events such as performance in concert form The theater manager by Mozart (17 June); the lconcert editions on Tosca (June 19) come on Turandot (28 June) with Giovanni Bietti; the recital Puccini’s Chanson with Giulia Mazzola and Marianna Tongiorni on the piano (27 June); the concert crossovers from the Novensemble Orchestra (July 1) e APERinCANTOthe musical aperitif for the final evening of the event (8 July).
