Reggio Calabria tops the fines ranking: the capital municipality that collects the most in Calabria

MILAN, 3 MAY 2024 – An analysis conducted by Facile.it on the data of Siop revealed that Reggio Calabria it is the provincial capital municipality that has collected the largest sum of proceeds from fines and sanctions relating to violations of the Highway Code during 2023. The city has registered a collection exceeding 2.7 million eurospositioning itself at the top of the Calabrian ranking.

The capital municipalities of Calabria as a whole have cashed in over 4 million euros from the application of traffic fines during the same period. Following Reggio Calabria in the regional rankings are Catanzaro, with over 700 thousand euros collected, and Crotone, which recorded an income of almost 390 thousand euros. The Calabrian ranking closes the municipality of Cosenza, with proceeds exceeding 208,000 euros.

The analysis also analyzed the amount of fines per capita, comparing the revenues recorded in Siope with the number of resident inhabitants. Reggio Calabria once again proved to be at the top of this special ranking, with an average of 16 euros of fines per inhabitant. A short distance away, Catanzaro follows with 9 euros and Crotone with 7 euros per inhabitant. The municipality of Cosenza, however, has a per capita fine of just 3 euros.

It should be noted that not all fines are issued to resident motorists, with tourists and commuters contributing significantly to overall revenues in some areas.

Looking at the smallest municipalities in Calabria, those with fewer than 2,000 residents, it emerges that the first two in the ranking are both in the province of Cosenza. Inlaywith just over 1,800 inhabitants, grossed almost 450 thousand euros in 2023, while Capo Spulico Rose Gardenwith 1,887 inhabitants, has collected more than 380,000 euros in fines.
