how to book new visits to Il Tirreno

LIVORNO The Cisternone, a monumental reservoir built in the first half of the 19th century by the architect Pasquale Poccianti, and normally not open to visitors, is once again open to the city – after being sold out in a few hours in recent weeks – with visits (free but by reservation).

The structure is considered by far the best-known and most evocative work by Pasquale Poccianti.

It is not only a work of great hydraulic engineering (it still functions as a large cistern for storing water) but also an architectural one. Due to its size and particularity of elements (the large hemispherical vault with the lacunar interior and the elegantly proportioned Doric colonnade) it blends the academic taste of the Tuscan tradition with the influences of neoclassical culture.
