Talking, discussing and campaigning for the European elections in Livorno is prohibited, at least according to the acronym Azione Livorno Antifascista: several hundred demonstrators, mainly from the port and student world, threw tomatoes and eggs at the police forces deployed in riot gear. The event took place in Livorno on the occasion of the visit of the leader of the League Matteo Salvini, who was present to present his new book. The clashes occurred in front of the Palazzo del Portuale, near the Quattro Mori theatre, where Salvini had planned to hold his presentation.
The protesters say that Livorno “does not tolerate the presence of Salvini and his fascist, racist and discriminatory policies on every front”.
