Herculaneum, here is Piazza Carlo di Borbone: a green area with a view of the excavations

Herculaneum. The modern city “embraces” the ancient city with a large green square overlooking the archaeological excavations. Piazza Carlo di Borbone will be inaugurated on Monday 6 May, created through an urban regeneration project started in 2014 thanks to the partnership between the Municipality, the Ministry of Culture and the Packard Humanities Institute.

An example of not only urban but also social regeneration: this is a neighborhood that – until some time ago – was held hostage by the Camorra and which can now become a meeting place between citizens and visitors. A unique intervention of its kind in Italy which will allow you to admire, from above, the entire perimeter of the archaeological area and the Gulf of Naples.

The opening of Piazza Carlo di Borbone is part of a larger project that affects the entire area of via Cortili-via Mare. «An extraordinary intervention of urban and social regeneration – underlines the mayor Ciro Buonanjuto – carried out in a strategic area. The opening of Piazza Carlo di Borbone represents a challenge won, because it is a commitment that involves local and state institutions, private partners and the community. A unique case in Italy, because it was created thanks to the financing of Pics funds from the Region and US philanthropic funds from a patron who has supported Herculaneum for 20 years. Let’s free Herculaneum from any dark ‘past’, let’s preserve its splendid heritage and offer a concrete possibility of growth and development to the new generations thanks to this collective commitment which finds its strength in tourism, beauty and legality”.
