800 years since the stigmata of Francis of Assisi in La Verna

In memory of the event of the stigmata of Saint Francis in La Verna (Arezzo), according to the religious tradition received on 17 September 1224, the Diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro and the association I Cammini di Francesco in Emilia-Romagna, together with the friars of the sanctuary of La Verna, come together to celebrate a moment of devotion. The occasion is the pilgrimage of the reliquary which houses a linen bandage soaked in blood which apparently belonged to Francis of Assisi.

Originally contained in a silver reliquary and traced in ancient archives, it was transferred after the miracle of 1901, documented in a canonical trial, which revived the color of the blood making it vivid and vermilion again. Since then the color of the blood has not changed.

From 4 to 12 May, the relic will stop in various municipalities of Valmarecchia, in the province of Rimini and in the Republic of San Marino, in a program full of religious functions, moments of reflection in places of suffering, cultural meetings and catechesis.

The journey of the relic will begin on May 4th in the church of the ancient convent of Sant’Igne, at the gates of San Leo, at 4pm. There will be a meeting whose main speech will be given by Brother Michele Maria Pini, Ofm, who accompanies the relic from La Verna throughout the entire journey.
