The Civic Theater of Cagliari, the Verdi Theater of Sassari and the Civic Theater of Alghero will be declared a national monument. The news of the extraordinary recognition is contained in a bill that has already passed the scrutiny of the Chamber of Deputies. Together with the three Sardinians, 405 Italian theaters will receive similar recognition, including the Scala in Milan and the San Carlo in Naples.

For the Verdi Theater of Sassari, in particular, the announcement coincides with the 140th anniversary of its foundation. It was established in 1884 by a group of people from Sassari, who decided at their own expense to allow the many enthusiasts of the city and the area to attend classical music concerts and opera performances. The initiative contributed to inserting Sassari into an important national cultural circuit.

“What makes this recognition even more precious are only its longevity, its historical value and the vitality and importance that the Verdi Theater still occupies today in regional and national cultural life, remaining a symbolic and beloved place of aggregation”, comments Stefano Mancini, artistic director of the Teatro e/o musica cooperative, which manages the theatre.

Confirmation of Verdi’s vitality is the recent success of the last few seasons which have seen a significant growth in audiences. The concert season, “The Great Interpreters of Music” 2024, had a surge this year with more than 400 subscribers and a total attendance, including the matinees for schools, of 4,734 spectators.
