Students mobilized to say ‘no to nuclear waste in the Trapani area’

Thousands of students flocked to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele to say ‘no’ to nuclear waste in the Trapani area. Billboards, flags and banners to ask Sogin, the ministerial company that has identified in Calatafimi-Segesta and Fulgatore, two sites suitable for candidacy to host the national nuclear waste repository.

This is despite the observations of unsuitability represented by the Municipalities of Trapani and Calatafimi-Segesta, together with all the mayors of the Municipalities of the province of Trapani, and despite the deliberate contrary of the previous regional Government.

This morning at 9 in the heart of the city, the Mayors and representatives of the productive and social world of Trapani met the students to invite them to take the field and be vigilant to protect their future and our territory.

During the event, the mayor of Trapani Giacomo Tranchida, the mayor of Calatafimi and Segesta Francesco Gruppuso, the mayor of Paceco Aldo Grammatico, Liria Canzoneri, secretary of the CGIL, Vito Pellegrino, president of Confindustria Trapani, spoke.

Present on stage together with them, among others, Maria Guccione, an activist who rebelled against drilling on the island of Favignana, Fabrizio Fonte, mayor of Custonaci, Salvatore Tallarita, mayor of Misiliscemi, Francesco La, mayor of Sala San Vito, Anna Mari Mazzara, councilor of Valderice, Rossella Cosentino councilor Erice, Francesco Poma mayor of Buseto, Rosalia d’Alì, president of the tourist district.

In the square with the boys were the regional deputies of Trapani, Dario Safina of the Democratic Party and Cristina Ciminnisi of the 5 Star Movement. Among others also Leoluca Orlando, former mayor of Palermo, and all the councilors of the Municipality of Trapani.

The demonstration against the storage of radioactive waste in the area is the third event. The first was held in Calatafimi-Segesta on April 7th, with the symbolic embrace of the Temple of Segesta to say NO to the National Radioactive Waste Repository, followed on April 28th by a well-attended citizen assembly in Fulgatore with the participation of all agricultural world.
