in Modena 131 female-led businesses

Few but present women in the automotive industry there may be more than we think. On the occasion of the Motor Valley Fest, our research office wanted to give a different interpretation regarding companies in the motor sector, analyzing how many female figures are present in the sector and who hold roles often considered predominantly “male”.

The data in Modena

In the province of Modena, the reality of the automotive sector they are overall 1,897: of these, 131 companies are female-led, equal to 6.9% of the sector. The incidence is lower than the average for female entrepreneurship, which in the province of Modena stands at 21.8%, equal to one female business in every 5, reconfirming that it is not a strictly pink-oriented sector. However, the figure is growing: in the fourth quarter of 2014 there were 101, while 9 years later they are 29.7% more.

The data collected with the detail by professions shows that in 2023 the Emilia-Romagna companies they are looking for 2,010 mechanical engineers, 2,550 mechanical technicians, 4,240 artisan mechanics, car repairers and maintainers and 570 test mechanics. For the latter professions, 9,370 entries are expected from companies in the region, which are difficult to find in two out of three cases. These are still male-dominated professions. Among mechanical engineers, women can potentially compete to fill 74.6% of vacant positions. Among mechanical technicians, the share of income accessible to women also stands at 39.6%, while it is 33.3% among test mechanics and 12.3% among artisan mechanics, car repairers and maintainers.

From the association they specify:

Often the search for new entries is aimed at the male gender because it is more difficult to find women interested in being part of this world even today. Expanding the pool of professionals to include women, however, could offer a solution to address the challenges linked to the lack of skills in the labor market. Introducing greater gender diversity into professional roles not only fosters greater equity and inclusion, but can also lead to a broadening of available talent. The spread of hybrid, electric and more generally the growing use of cutting-edge technologies in the automotive supply chain outlines a demand for work increasingly characterized by a greater diffusion of e-skills. As an association we are committed to encouraging and promoting a different vision, so that equal opportunities can be guaranteed and to contribute to the elimination of obsolete and archaic stereotypes.
