«The Varco d’Izzo speed camera must be turned off and the illegitimate fines paid by motorists must be reimbursed because the device is not approved», said the lawyer Grazia Antonio Romano on the sidelines of the press conference held last Tuesday in Potenza for discuss the speed detection device on the national road 407 Basentana.
Known as the “Varco d’Izzo” speed camera, the speed control device is located on the stretch of road of the Statale 407 Basentana, at the Potenza east intersection. Romano is the representative and defender of the associations “Briganti d’Italia”, “La quinta porta”, “Grean-Environmental Equestrian Guards” and “Vola – Volunteers for the environment placel”, which together with the “Citizens’ Committee no speed cameras” yesterday they discussed the topic, making specific requests.
«First of all – explains Romano – the speed camera must be approved, because it is not, and therefore cannot be overhauled. The Municipality of Potenza never produced the approval document, it simply said that the device is authorised. If the technical data of the approval is missing, which is a technical process, how can it be reviewed? Authorization is an administrative procedure, but what can be authorized if the technical bases are missing? Another issue in his opinion is the location.
«The machine is located – says Romano – on a municipal road and gives fines on the state road, violating the Highway Code. Anas cannot delegate the Municipality to install speed cameras. There, however, he gave the all-clear. How do you put a speed camera on a straight road, with a 70 km per hour limit, when at the previous bend you can go at 90 per hour? It’s clear why it was put there: it’s a quick way for the Municipality to raise cash. Most of those fined exceeded the speed by 7-10 km.”
«We ask – concludes Romano – the suspension of the device, it must be turned off. We are evaluating a class action for the reimbursement of all the fines that were issued for an illegitimate speed camera.”
