Basilicata. First May, Cavallo (Reg. CISL): “The environmental transition must be governed to safeguard work”

Ecological transition, social pact and safety at work were the main themes touched upon by the general secretary of the CISL Basilicata Vincenzo Cavallo during his speech at the regional event of CGIL, CISL and UIL for May Day which was held in the morning in Villa d’Agri: «We return to Val d’Agri, a land of contradictions and a metaphor for expectations betrayed by oil, to say that we must be able to imagine a future beyond extraction, creating today, also thanks to oil, the conditions for a green transition that is not to the detriment of male and female workers. From this square we want to throw down the gauntlet to the future regional council to say that we need to change the register on the management of royalties, that we cannot continue with the logic of the past which has produced stark inequalities between communities that have a lot – and that much they do not have been able to fully exploit it – and communities that have nothing. We must make oil an opportunity for wealth and development for all and to prepare the transition towards clean energy.”

The CISL leader added that «the climate crisis is the real challenge of the century and also represents an imperative for the trade union movement to adopt policies aimed at pursuing a transition towards a model of sustainable development», warning that «the struggle climate change cannot ignore the fight for social justice and employment. The environmental transition is a process that must be governed rationally with adequate industrial policies and active labor policies capable of ensuring social sustainability within a radical change of economic paradigm. We want to understand how we intend to deal with a transition within a transition like the one affecting the Melfi automotive hub, grappling with perhaps the most difficult chapter in its industrial history. The transition to electric mobility is an opportunity that must be governed responsibly without ideological attitudes, safeguarding employment.”

From the stage of Villa d’Agri Cavallo relaunched the proposal for a social pact for the future of Basilicata: «The next few months will be decisive for designing the strategic future of our region and we need an authoritative policy capable of being a reliable interlocutor towards the national government and to confront instead of dialogue with economic and social forces with an open and plural vision of democracy. The invitation I would like to address to all parties, and in particular to the parties which in the recent elections received the task of governing this region from the sovereign people, is to work for the common good of the Lucanians. Our proposal for a social pact is the only viable way to bring good politics back to the heart of Lucanian society. There are no more alibis for those who will not prove up to the challenges that this complex time places before us. This square claims the right to dream of a better future for itself and for future generations.”

Cavallo also reiterated the need for more incisive interventions against the social scourge of deaths at work, «victims of a silent massacre that is not worthy of a civilized and democratic country like Italy aspires to be. It is no longer tolerable to face this daily trail of blood with cold and empty rhetoric. It’s time to act, it’s time to change the rules”, thundered the CISL secretary who then added: “We intend to press the Government, the business system, local autonomies to guarantee full implementation of the measures just introduced with Legislative Decree 19/ 2024 and implement other indispensable interventions to build an organic national strategy that will finally stop this shameful trail of blood.”

Among the proposals relaunched by the CISL secretary, the strengthening of the regional safety observatory which “must increasingly take on the profile of a structure for coordinating accident prevention and prevention policies with real powers of intervention”, and specific supply chain agreements , starting from the sectors most exposed to the accident phenomenon, such as construction and agriculture, «with the aim of rewarding virtuous companies that respect the rules and contracts and disseminate good practices in terms of health and safety».
