May 1st, the meeting between the mayor Cisint and Sbarra: work and the “Monfalcone case”

Long and significant meeting, on the occasion of May Day, between the mayor of Monfalcone, Anna Maria Cisint and the national secretary of the CISL Luigi Sbarra, accompanied by the regional and provincial managers of the organization, on the issues of work and the protection of workers’ health which pushed the union to choose Monfalcone as the venue for the national demonstration. Previously Cisint had also met with the general secretary of Uil Pierpaolo Bombardieri to discuss the same issues.

In particular, Sbarra wanted to thank the municipal administration for the support and availability given to host the event and for the attention that the Municipality places in the relationship with social forces and in labor policies. A broad convergence has emerged between the positions of the CISL and the platform concerning the “Monfalcone case” with respect to the review of the production system regarding subcontracting and the selection of contracting companies and with regard to the issue of workplace safety also linked to the asbestos risk, which Sbarra also referred to in his speech from the stage.

The CISL Secretary underlined some of the results of recent government measures, such as that of contractual equality within the various sectors, to combat the phenomenon of wage dumping, the hiring of 766 Inail inspectors to strengthen controls and management of funds of cohesion for development.

“To give dignity and value to work – Cisint noted in turn – there is no need for demagogy and the banalities of clichés as in some passages by Landini. We need to understand the reality of production situations and work concretely to reverse a system that established itself in large companies like our shipyard at the beginning of the 2000s and, through the uncontrolled arrival of foreigners, has reduced salary and contractual protection and caused social problems significant in the territory, also due to the non-availability of integrating new presences, especially Muslim ones. Monfalcone today is the point of greatest evidence for understanding the phenomenon of procurement in Italy and the related consequences that reverberate on the marginalization of the local workforce and on city management. Our territory represents in an emblematic way on the one hand the capacity for transformation by focusing on innovation, sustainability and employment in the most qualified sectors, on the other the persistence in the shipyards of a production system still to be profoundly renewed in the name of responsibility corporate social. For this reason, giving value to work has become the priority objective of the Municipality in this mandate and the “Monfalcone case” placed at the ministerial table has become a symbol of the development model to be given to our country”.

Even in the meeting with Bombardier, mayor Cisint illustrated the particular city reality. The national secretary of the Uil showed great attention to the issues raised and accepted the invitation made by Mayor Cisint for the social partners, at all levels, to be part of the battle carried out for months by the municipal administration.
