Pietrarsa it is officially swimmable. The the municipality of Naples has revoked the ordinance of early April which had excluded the possibility of diving into the body of water at the foot of the railway museum. A short stretch of San Giovanni a Teduccio, in the eastern area of Naples, returns to bathers after the first annual check for the presence of bacteria. A real turning point after several decades of denied sea.

The new decision of Palazzo San Giacomo follows the successful outcome of the water sample taken by Arpac last April 23rd in the Pietrarsa stretch and which, for now, has highlighted the presence of intestinal Enterococci and Escherichia coli in acceptable levels. A result obtained «thanks to the important interventions on the sewers, under construction in San Giovanni, which are giving the first concrete results», highlighted by the infrastructure department of the Piazza Municipio institution. Upon closer inspection, no anomalies had emerged in the quantity of bacteria in the seven seasonal checks in 2023. And previously overruns have only occurred on a few occasions. In fact, the judgment of suitability at the beginning of the bathing season «derives from the statistical analysis of the last four years of monitoring based on the analytical results of two bacteriological parameters», we read on the website of the regional agency that monitors the waters of Campania.

The new ordinance of the Municipality – edited by the Service for the Protection of the Environment, Health and Landscape and signed by the mayor Gaetano Manfredi – revokes the act of 5 April and readmits to bathing the stretch called “Pietrarsa”, 929 meters of coast which they run in front of the San Giovanni a Teduccio promenade up to the railway museum. The newly readmitted body of water must, in any case, obtain the new classification. «These waters will be classified upon reaching the minimum data set necessary for the attribution of the quality class including at least 16 samples», is specified by Arpac which will carry out another five samples in San Giovanni, one every month until October. It is therefore necessary to wait further time for confirmation of the data which, to the delight of residents and activists, is positive.

The long stretch in front of the so-called “town hall beach” remains out of reach of swimmers. Almost two kilometers stuck between the former purifier and the “lagno”, or the collector Fly, which remain banned as “waters not used for bathing and permanently prohibited”, as also put in black and white in the municipal ordinance which highlights that the coastal marine areas prohibited with the 2006 ordinance “can be readmitted to bathing only following the completion of the seabed reclamation operations”. The Volla – which will be decommissioned through ongoing works – is only one of the six drains without purification that flow into the sea of San Giovanni: they dirty and pollute the waters from Vigliena up to the cliff of the former purifier where the Sannicandro canal.

The path to fully return the sea of San Giovanni to residents and potential tourists is still long and complicated. Meanwhile, years later – after the analyzes carried out by the Municipality as foreseen by the agreement for the SIN “Oriental Naples” – it is possible to enjoy sunbathing on the two beaches reopened to the public except for two small spaces which will be reclaimed. Far-reaching interventions and projects are on the horizon to regenerate the entire eastern coast of Naples between green terraces overlooking the sea, spaces for students and businesses, a tourist port and other revitalization opportunities for the former industrial district.
