At the Santo Stefano hospital in Prato, multiple organs were removed from the same 55-year-old donor

From the generosity of the donors’ families a concrete life expectancy for at least six patients on the waiting list. This is what happened on the weekend of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st, which had as protagonists the teams from the Santo Stefano di Prato and San Giovanni di Dio di Firenze hospitals of the ASL Toscana Centro, and a Hospice.

AtSanto Stefano hospital in Pratoto the same one 55 year old donor had multiple organs removed: the heart that was transplanted in Siena, the two kidneys, also part of the liver (the liver can be “divided”) which was accepted by an extra-regional Transplant Center for a pediatric emergency and the other part in Pisa. Lungs, skin and corneas were also donated.

Two other corneal harvests occurred in Florence on Sunday 21st, the first atSan Giovanni di Dio hospital, the other at the Oblate Hospice.

Daniele Cultrera, Coordinator of the Vast Central Area (ASL Tuscany Centre, Careggi and Meyer) expresses his deepest satisfaction for the generosity of donors and families. “This exceptional event, which takes place a few days after the National Day for Organ and Tissue Donation celebrated on Sunday 14 April, has given concrete hope of life to at least 6 patients on the waiting list”.

On behalf of Eufrasio Girardi, current manager of the Corporate Donation and Transplant Structure of central Tuscany, special thanks go to the medical staff – the surgeons involved in the sampling belong to the organ allocation structures – and to the nursing staff of the operating rooms and the Transplant Coordination company, to the professionalism and motivation of all healthcare workers involved in this extraordinary work.

The Large Area Coordination guarantees the appropriate functional connections between the regional transplant coordinator and the relevant local coordinations by promoting collaboration between the local coordinations of the local health authority and the local coordinations of the university hospitals of Careggi and Meyer.
