Bad weather, yellow alert in Piedmont: “Also very heavy rain, snowfall above 1800 meters and risk of avalanches”

There is a yellow alert due to hydrogeological risk and avalanche risk in Piedmont. It was issued for tomorrow 1st May by the Functional Center of Arpa, the regional environmental protection agency of Piedmont. In particular, the avalanche risk concerns the entire western foothills and Val Sesia.

Since this afternoon, a gradual worsening has been taking place in Piedmont, with rain and showers that will intensify during the night. Moderate and heavy rainfall is expected from tomorrow morning, locally very heavy in the western and northern areas, including thunderstorms. The snow level is expected at 1800-2000 metres.

The bad weather will also continue on Thursday with moderate rainfall in the first part of the day, but generally easing in the afternoon, when light showers may occur. On the mountain front, the gradual rise in temperatures is leading to the humidification of the snowpack up to high altitudes.

The precipitation expected in the next few days will bring significant accumulations of new snow in the high mountains, especially in the western and northern sectors, while the mid-mountain belt could be subject to intense rain-on-snow events, where still present.

Tomorrow, level 4-Strong avalanche warning will be reached at high altitude in Val Pellice, Val Germanasca and on the border between the Northern Cottian Alps and the Pennine Alps. On the western and northern pre-Alpine sectors, characterized by more reduced and discontinuous snowfall, the level of danger will reach 3-Considerable.

Elsewhere the degree of danger will be 3-Marked at altitude and 2-Moderate at low and medium mountain altitudes. ARPA recommended caution because “due to the push to humidify the snowpack, natural avalanches could travel a long way, even reaching areas without snow”.
