Entrance ticket to Venice: when it is valid, how much it costs and who has to pay it. Here’s everything you need to know

The much-discussed entry ticket has finally become a reality. Last April 25th the baptism (of fire, given the controversy) took place for the “access fee” strongly supported by the municipal administration of the lagoon city: it is estimated that Palazzo Dandolo made money on the first day alone 70 thousand euros (net of the crafty ones).

How does the ticket work? Who has to pay and who is exempt? When and how do you have to pay? Let’s clarify things a little.

What is the “access fee” to Venice, what is it for and how much does it amount to

Starting in 2024 tourists who want to visit beautiful Venice for a day will have to pay a fee contribution equal to 5 euros. The Municipality’s initiative, as expected, was greeted with quite a bit of controversy, however the objective is – in a certain way – laudable: discourage daily travellers and consequently try to avoid the city filling up, especially on long weekends or during holidays.

On which days do you pay the tax in Venice and how

2024 is the year of experimentation: I am alone” 29Indeed, the days on which payment is required of the ticket:

  • May day tourists will have to pay the access fee on days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26;
  • Junethe “paid” days will be the 8th, 9th, 15th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd, 29th and 30th;
  • Julythose who want to visit Venice for the day will be required to pay the 5 euro ticket on days 6, 7, 13 and 14.

The access fee must be paid via the city of Venice portal: once the transaction has been completed you will receive a QR code which will be requested, in the event of checks, by the personnel in charge.

For which areas of the city of Venice is payment of the access fee required?

On “paid” dates the ticket will be mandatory both to enter the city of Venice and to visit the major islands; it will not be required, however, on the smaller islands (primarily Murano and Murano, but also Pellestrina, Torcello, Sant’Erasmo, Mazzorbo, Mazzorbetto, Vignole, S. Andrea, the Certosa, San Servolo, S. Clemente, Poveglia and the Lido from Venice).

It should be kept in mind that the ticket is valid for the whole day: once paid it will therefore be possible to enter and exit, without any limitations, from the areas where it is mandatory.

Who has to pay the Venice tourist tax

As mentioned, the entrance ticket is mandatory for all those who wish to visit the city for the day: anyone over 14 years old and arriving in the Lagoon by any means of transport (whether by car, train, plane or ferry) between 08.30 and 16.00 on one of the “paid” days, you will be required to pay the access fee of 5 euros; anyone who is “pinned” without a ticket will have to pay not only one sanction (whatever from 50 to 300 euros) but also the cost of the ticket.

Who does not have to pay and who must request exemption

Tourists who stay overnight in the lagoon city, holders of the European Disability Card (and their companions), minors under 14 years of age, as well as those who reside or were born in the municipality of Venice do not have to pay or even request an exemption.

However, those who reside in Veneto, workers, commuters and students of schools of all levels and universities will have to request exemption; Furthermore, anyone who visits residents in the city (whether a relative or friend) will be able to request exemption.

If I pay the ticket by mistake, can I ask for a refund?

Absolutely yes: simply log in to the cancellation portal, enter your booking code and request a refund. However, it is not possible to change the date on the ticket.
