The G7 in Piedmont, Confagricoltura Alessandria: let’s remember the role of agriculture

The G7 is currently underway in Turin where climate, energy and the environment will be discussed in the presence of the heads of state and ministers of the governments of Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. America. To these will be added the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission.

Three major themes involving the primary sector.Paola Saccopresident of Confagricoltura Alessandria, recalls, in fact, how “The effectiveness of future political initiatives depends on a reevaluation of the role of agriculture”.

“The relationship between the primary sector, science and politics in the European and non-European panorama is essential to define new strategies to deal with ongoing climate change, reduce soil impoverishment and protect ecosystems, while continuing to produce food of quality, economically and socially sustainable” highlights the president.

Confagricoltura Alessandria has long underlined the importance of networking between the various subjects involved, from the institutions to the population, creating opportunities for knowledge, sharing and participation to develop intelligent management of nature.

“We constantly pursue a policy of promoting and enhancing the environment, landscape and natural resources based on respect and protection of our territories; we are not just producers, but entrepreneurs linked to the territory and, as such, we optimize corporate choices by also orienting them towards the circularity of production systems and the diversification of activities, focusing on what will be the key words for Europe in the next four years, to continue doing business: competitiveness, productivity, sustainability and energy” states the president of Confagricoltura Alessandria.

Speaking of circular economy, it is important to underline that the Piedmont Region is among the first in Italy for the development of biogas. In the province of Alessandria, 31 plants are authorized (source Arpa).

Thanks to the PNRR funds, some investments are more affordable, but there are still too many efforts in terms of compliance, burdensome practices and changes to production processes, without any form of adequate remuneration, which entrepreneurs must support.

A final point for reflection from Confagricoltura Alessandria concerns, again with a view to achieving carbon neutrality, some very important dossiers that are still open and for which a quick closure is requested: carbon farming (the agreement reached at the end of February between the European Parliament and the Council on the first voluntary framework for the certification of carbon removals at EU level) and TEA, (assisted evolution techniques). “An agreement must be reached as soon as possible regarding their classification within the European Union legislation to provide farmers with useful tools to counteract the effects of climate change with plants that are more tolerant to high temperatures and drought, as well as more efficient in the use of water and nutritional resources, resistant to diseases, and which guarantee, at the same time, an adequate production potential” concludes Sacco.
