At the level of professional Italian boxing, there couldn’t be a more interesting match at the moment. On Friday evening in the Palaoreto ring in Palermo it will become reality because Armando Casamonica, known as ‘La Furia del Quadraro’ (the Roman village where he was born), and Gianluca Picardi, a member of a Campania family that has great boxing traditions (his brother Vincenzo was bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics), will compete for the Italian super-lightweight title, category with a limit of 63.5 kg.
This match is part of the ‘Opi Fight Night’, an evening organized by the promotion and management company Opi Since 82, and will mark the great return of professional boxing in the Sicilian capital: in Palermo, in fact, no match valid for the Italian title was held for over five years.
But this boxing event also wants to be a musical and cultural show, with the presence of a DJ set and above all of the champion (also of kick boxing) Gloria Peritore with her association ‘Shadow Project’: the 35-year-old from Licata will play a sub-highlight match and will be testimonial of the “Fight the violence” project which deals with combating psychological violence against women and victims of bullying.
A topic, that of bullying, which is also close to the heart of Armando Casamonica, someone who has always wanted to point out, regarding what is said and written about other members of the family group to which he belongs, that “I have chosen the path of honesty and effort, and I am a professional boxer and that’s it, dedicated only and exclusively to sport”, a phrase also repeated in recent days. “You get into the ring, you do the glove sessions every week, you do the diet – he added -.
But I was born for this, and I’m sure boxing will repay me.”
