six officers in hospital for assaulting prisoners

Puglia prisons, chaos in institutions: six prison officers attacked by inmates end up in hospital

In recent days, six prison officers have ended up in hospital after being attacked, in different circumstances, in the prisons of Bari, Trani, Foggia, Lecce and Taranto.

This is reported by the national secretary of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union (Sappe), Federico Pilagatti, who speaks of the difficult situation of the Apulian prisons where there are «daily fights between groups of prisoners who exploit the “freedom” of being open» and recalls the The latest episode occurred yesterday in Lecce “with around fifty prisoners involved”.

The Sappe, highlights Pilagatti, «has always condemned all episodes in which violence is used against prisoners, but it cannot even accept that media trials with relative condemnation of the category are based only on the statements and evidence of the prosecution, without having given the suspects the opportunity to defend themselves and explain their reasons”.

The trade unionist asks some questions “to which no one answers: why have the number of policemen, educators and social workers been significantly reduced despite knowing that this would have eliminated the safety and re-education process of prisoners?
Why hasn’t we invested in new structures, some of which date back to the Bourbon period?
Why were funds also denied for ordinary maintenance work (necessary for normal houses), which would have made it possible to shore up the prison structures which instead have become dilapidated?”, asks the trade unionist.
