Skaneateles High School topped the 2024 rankings of best public high schools in the Syracuse metro area by US News and World Report.
In addition to topping the local rankings, Skaneateles was ranked the 65th best public high school in all of New York and No. 538 nationwide. Fayetteville-Manlius High School was second in the Syracuse metro area, along with ranking 79th in New York and No. 706 in the US
US News released its 2024 high school rankings April 23. The rankings take into account multiple factors, including state test scores in math, reading and science, college readiness among students, curriculum and graduation rates.
US News evaluated nearly 18,000 schools for the 2024 rankings.
After Skaneateles and FM, Jamesville-DeWitt, Cazenovia and Marcellus rounded out the Syracuse area’s top five. The Syracuse metro area includes Madison, Onondaga and Oswego counties.
The highest-ranking Syracuse City School District school on the list was Corcoran High School, which ranked No. 32 in the Syracuse metro area.
Wealthy, suburban districts like Fayetteville and Skaneateles often rank highly on lists like the one from US News.
Wealthier communities often have more resources to direct to schools. And students in places like the city of Syracuse often face challenges their peers in the suburbs don’t, including higher rates of poverty and hunger.
