Presentation of the volume by Giovanni Scirocco And Giulio Talini Children of a “tormented century”. The correspondence between Furio Diaz and Antonio Giolitti 1945 – 1998
The meeting, organized byHistorical Institute of the Resistance and Contemporary Society in the province of Livorno ISTORECO with the patronage of the Municipality of Livorno, del GE Modigliani political culture club and of Circolo Fratelli Rosselli Foundation, will focus on the volume that reconstructs the extensive correspondence between Furio Diaz, mayor of Livorno between 1944 and 1954 and internationally renowned historian of the European Enlightenment, and Antonio Giolitti, minister, European commissioner and leading exponent of the PCI and PSI, which has remained unpublished until now and has only rarely been cited by scholars. The research carried out by Giulio Talini and Giovanni Scirocco therefore intends to present a critical and commented edition of this very fruitful exchange of letters and ideas in the light of the most recent and updated historiography. In fact, the correspondence between Diaz and Giolitti does not only tell of an intimate and fraternal friendship that remained firm during the twentieth century, but also testifies to the troubled human, intellectual and political path of its two protagonists, guided by a never-denied underlying ethical-political choice through the most dramatic circumstances in recent history.
