Clams not traced and passed off as blue crab, 2.5 tons seized in Castellammare di Stabia

The operation, which began late yesterday evening 04/29/2024, involved around ten soldiers. In particular, they carried out checks in the territory of Castellammare di Stabia and the neighboring municipalities, finding inside a vehicle the presence of approximately 2.5 tonnes of “lupino” clam (from the scientific name “chamelea gallina”), without any document capable of certifying its origin, the fishing area, the gear used or the fishing vessel that carried out the fishing.

In order to evade potential controls, the bivalve molluscs mentioned above, had been
hidden inside polystyrene containers bearing the words blue crab.
For this reason, the driver of the vehicle was sanctioned for the detention of
fish product not traced and with an administrative fine of €1,500.00, while the fish product found was subjected to seizure as an additional sanction.
