Pope Francis appoints Monsignor Alfonso Raimo auxiliary bishop of Salerno

Pope Francis has appointed auxiliary bishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Salerno – Campagna – Acerno Monsignor Alfonso Raimo, until now vicar general. Raimo was born on 2 July 1959 in Calabritto, in the province of Avellino. He achieved the baccalaureate in Theology in the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy and subsequently the license in Missional Theology at the Pontifical Urbaniana University of Rome.

He was ordained a priest on 18 March 1990. He held the following positions: parish vicar (1990-1998) and then parish priest (1998-2011) of Saints Martino and Quirico in Fisciano; regional head of missionary pastoral care of the Campania Episcopal Conference (2001-2012); since 2007, professor of Mission Theology at the Theological Institute of Salerno and the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences of Salerno; parish priest of S. Maria del Carmine and S. Eustachio in S. Francesco, Eboli (2011-2015); chaplain of the Eboli prison (2011-2019); since 2015 parish priest of S. Bartolomeo Apostolo, Eboli; deputy director of the diocesan missionary office (2016-2020); since 2020, vicar general and member of the Council for Economic Affairs of the diocesan museum; since 2021, member of the College of Consultors and of the diocesan Pastoral Council.

This morning the announcement of the appointment by Archbishop Andrea Bellandi: «The Holy Father considered, with this decision, to give a sign of affectionate closeness to our archdioceserich in a glorious past, also guarding the remains of the holy apostle and evangelist Matthew, but open to the missionary challenges of the present time”.
