At the Pepoli Museum in Trapani two new canvases by Guttuso

TRAPANI – The Pepoli Regional Museum of Trapani is enriched with the addition of new contemporary works.

Friday 3 Mayat 5pm, in the conference room of the Museum, they will be presented two autograph canvases by Renato Guttusorecently acquired, in the presence of the regional councilor for cultural heritage and Sicilian identity and the general manager of the cultural heritage department.

The two works were generously donated by Michelangela Scalabrino, retired professor from the Catholic University of Milan, who wanted to pay homage to the museum of his family’s city of origin. The professor spent her summer holidays in Trapani as a child with her father, a doctor who had received these paintings as a gift from the painter from Bagheria.

The event, entitled “Guttuso. The passion of color. Acquisitions at the Museum“, was created with the contribution of the Friends of the Pepoli Museum association.

The first painting,”Farmer riding a donkey“, created in 1954, is a study for a large oil painting entitled “The occupation of uncultivated lands”, which represents the social realism dear to the master from Bagheria. The second painting,”Peasant“, from 1956, portrays a woman with a bundle on her head, immersed in a barren and rocky landscape. Both works represent the humble engaged with dignity in hard daily workenhancing the brightness of the Sicilian land.

The two canvases, now part of the museum’s permanent collection, will be exhibited in the art galleryin the room previously dedicated to “Portrait of Nunzio Nasi” Of Giacomo Balla, now intended for works from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The exhibition environment is remodeled to also include the “Head of an old man” in bronze by Domenico Trentacoste and the marble bas-relief of Domenico Li Muliboth expressions of important artistic currents of the period.
