Campania, 500 thousand diabetic patients: forecasts for the five-year period are not reassuring

The Coordination of Campania’s diabetic patient associations, with the representative Fabiana Anastasio, promotes the second meeting of the patient federations of the macro-area of Southern Italy.

Campania has 500 thousand people with diabetes out of the 6 million in Italy: in twenty years, the number of people suffering from diabetes appears to have more than doubled, going from 150 to 350 million. The forecasts for the next five years are certainly not reassuring: the World Health Organization estimates a growth in patients of up to 600 million by 2030.

“The diabetic pathology – states Fabiana Anastasio, president of the Coordination of Diabetic Associations of Campania – affects not only the patient, but also the family, healthcare facilities, assistance and the world of work. Chronicity paradigm, must be addressed with correct information on the need for an adequate lifestyle and structured, timely, effective and efficient management”.

The growing numbers of the diabetic population and the enormous increase in clinical costs due to ineffective management risk making the financial effort necessary to guarantee assistance to all people unsustainable in the coming years. Starting from these data, the Coordination of Campania’s diabetic patient associations, with the representative Fabiana Anastasio, promotes the second meeting of the patient federations of the macro-area of Southern Italy.

Appointment on 3-4 May 2024, starting from 9:00 am, at the Renaissance hotel Mediterraneo in Naples. In addition to the patients, representatives of the institutional and healthcare world were involved. President Vincenzo De Luca is expected to participate in the event “Regional territorial organizations for diabetics and for stakeholders in the Southern regions. Diabetes networks and caregivers”. At the center of the two-day conference is the construction of the diabetes network which, based on the indications of the guidelines of the scientific societies and the National Diabetes Plan, regulates the paths in order to optimize their functions and results.

“To win this challenge – continues Anastasio – a strong alliance between institutions, those who treat the disease and those who have the disease is essential. This is the purpose of the meeting from which we would like to see a shared document of intent on the actions to be implemented”.
